Ela-Mana-Mou was put down on Wednesday, 6th August, at Simmonstown Stud due to the infirmities of old age.
Ela-Mana-Mou, foaled in 1976 by Pitcairn out of the
High Hat mare Rose Bertin, won 10 races from two to
four, including the Eclipse Stakes and King George VI &
Queen Elizabeth Stakes, while his other Group victories
included the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, now another Gr.1.
He was Champion Older Horse in 1980, rated 132, and
retired from racing to stand at Airlie Stud in 1981,
remaining there for the next 27 years.
He sired the winners of nearly 700 races including Gr.1
winners Sumayr, Almaarad, Eurobird, Natski, Emmson, Snurge and Double Trigger. He has also been a successful broodmare sire with his daughters producing
numerous Group winners including White Muzzle,
Rifapour, Petrushka, Second Empire and this year’s
Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes winner Equiano.
